Parks Canada is seeking highly motivated team-players with excellent communication skills to join our dynamic team to present, educate and promote Parks Canada places and programs. Members of this Parks Canada team work in a variety of ways and from various locations throughout Metro Vancouver and Vancouver Island. You may be part of a heritage interpretation or urban outreach team. You may work from a partner venue, such as the Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea or TELUS World of Science. You may plan, develop and attend events and workshops and create dynamic social media campaigns.

The key role for this Parks Canada team is to deliver events, promotions, outreach, and interpretation programs. Their purpose is to increase awareness, appreciation and support for Parks Canada protected areas by connecting, engaging and interacting with visitors to parks and sites, urban families, young adults and newcomers to Canada, among other audiences. Through the promotion and delivery of innovative programs and interactive presentations, the team encourages visitors to experience our rich history and the outdoors and to learn more about our environment and heritage.

Key elements of this job may include:
• Create compelling social media campaigns to visually share the stories of Parks Canada’s programs and initiatives;
• Engage diverse audiences through activities, workshops, on-site and overnight camping events;
• Provide the information and outdoor skills visitors need to embark on an adventure at Parks Canada places;
• Provide promotional information to draw visitors to Parks Canada locations, and increase visitation;
• Assist with the development, planning, delivery, and evaluation of outreach events;
• Work collaboratively with a variety of Parks Canada team members.

Successful students will work for approximately 14 to 18 weeks between January and April, 2020. Positions require students to work variable hours, shift-work, weekends and holidays, as well as work in a range of weather conditions. Successful candidates must commit to the entire work term.

Work environment

Parks Canada is a federal government agency responsible for the protection and presentation of Canada’s outstanding natural and cultural resources through a system of national parks, national marine conservation areas and national historic sites in all regions of Canada.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to hire students for the work term January to April 2020. We will only contact students who demonstrate clearly in the screening follow up questions that they possess the education and experience required for this opportunity.

The results may be used in the future to fill other temporary student vacancies that may arise in Coastal BC Field Unit, in various locations, with full or part-time hours for various tenures, depending on status of the selected candidate.

Experience:
• Experience working, volunteering, planning and/or coordinating public events

• Experience writing articles, stories, or social media campaigns
• Experience with computer software (such as: Microsoft Office suite)

• Knowledge and experience in outdoor activities: canoeing, kayaking, camping, etc.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

• Proof of enrolment in a post-secondary institution (done at time of hiring)

• Willingness to use safe work practices and required personal protective clothing (training and terms of use provided)
• Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform, and occasionally, a mascot costume
• Willingness to work outdoors and stand/walk for extended periods of time (sometimes in adverse weather conditions)
• Willingness to work shift-work, weekends, evening, overtime and statutory holidays
• Willingness to set-up, take-down and move equipment (including large and heavy equipment, tables and tents)
