Sea Smart is looking for dynamic world-changers to help us deliver full-day ocean conservation school workshops to students across Metro Vancouver from Grades 4 to 12. Join our passionate group of science communication and environmental educators in organizing and delivering high impact student programming to hundreds of participants in Vancouver. We are looking for individuals who have the passion and commitment to inspire youth to make a positive impact on the environment.

About Sea Smart
Sea Smart is a charity that uses fun, hands-on games and activities to teach youth in Kindergarten to Grade 12 about current issues impacting our oceans and get them brainstorming solutions. Created by marine biologist Dr. Elaine Leung, Sea Smart helps youth understand the role they play in making the world a better place while building essential life skills such as creative thinking, personal awareness, and social responsibility. Sea Smart’s innovative curriculum teaches youth about ocean issues with a solutions-based approach that is much needed in this day and age when environmental problems are overwhelming and it is easy to lose hope.
Through Sea Smart’s school workshops, we aim to inspire kids to love and protect our oceans. Under the direction of the Program Manager, the Educator’s primary responsibility is to deliver programs in a fun and engaging manner to teach students about ocean issues and how we can help. In this role, you will be primarily responsible for delivering our school workshops, as well as participate in our public engagement events and other education programs as required.
Job Description
Under the guidance of the Program Manager, the main duties of the Educator are:
- Delivery of full-day school workshops
- Using inquiry-based teaching techniques to promote wonder and excitement in students
- Educating students from Grades 4-12 about ocean biology and conservation
- Assisting with occasional outreach events
- Engaging with people of all ages in public outreach events to promote ocean conservation
- Travelling to various schools for workshops and programs
Qualifications Required
- A strong background in science, environmental issues or sustainability
- At least two years of experience working with youth (ages 5-17), ideally in a teaching environment
- Proven leadership skills and exceptional teamwork abilities
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Planning, organizational, multi-tasking and self-directed work skills
- Clear criminal record check for the vulnerable sector within the last three years or ability to obtain and pass a clear criminal record check
- Minimum emergency first aid and CPR C level certification within the last three years
- Marine biology experience is highly desired but not required; if applicable, please highlight your marine biology experience in your cover letter
- Having regular access to a reliable vehicle and valid driver’s license is highly desired but not required; if applicable, please highlight your vehicle access in your cover letter
This position is part of the Green Spaces, UNA-Canada program and applicants must fulfill the following eligibility criteria:
- Between the ages of 15 and 30 (inclusive) at time of intake
- Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or those who have been granted refugee status in Canada
- Be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations
Term of Appointment
This position is based in Vancouver and successful applicants must be willing to relocate to Metro Vancouver if they live elsewhere. This contract is between Jan 3 to Feb 28, 2020, with the possibility of extension pending performance. Full-time hours are approximately 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, for 37.5 hours per week. There will be some occasions where you will need to work during evenings and weekends. The work hours in such weeks will be adjusted to a total 37.5 hours per week.
Remuneration
$15-$19/hour, based on experience.
