Student volunteers wanted for a “National Forest Week” (NFW) event that actually will take place after NFW in the morning of Oct.9.
It will take place in Mundy Park, Coquitlam and is aimed at grade 4-7 students. The idea is that teachers will circulate between stations set up in forest that are manned by volunteers. Stations cover topics such as: the importance of forests, forest ecology, tree identification, forest harvesting, First Nations relationship with the forest, and wood products from the forest. It is also possible to change a topic.
Volunteers are needed to man these stations – the aim is for 1-2 people per station. This involves setting up station (you can bring materials and/or I can help you with that) and then talking for 10-15 minutes with the students as they come to your station. If you include a hands-on activity – this would be excellent as learning is generally much better retained if there is physical involvement!
The event schedule is approximately:
9:30 – 10:00 – classes arrive, welcome, review of procedure
10:00 – 12:00 – classes circulate to 6 stations (allows ~15 min. per station & 5 min. walk to next station)
12:00 – 12:30 – take-down & finish
I would be able to give a ride out to Coquitlam (I live at UBC but could pick up from elsewhere).
We have a group of excited teachers and their students who will benefit from this forest learning!
