Description:
Working with Toronto Botanical Garden education and horticultural teams, the Nature Educators will plan, maintain, and interpret TBG’s Teaching Garden and lead the inclusion of Indigenous and cultural/botanical heritage and/or accessibility focused plants and programs. This garden is tended to by children attending TBG school programs and camps. The harvest is shared between them and a local food bank. Our educational programs, many of which support the Ontario school curriculum, will immerse children in the natural world and draw connections for children between the natural world, art, and culture. Students will participate in hands-on activities including planting and working in the garden, learning about plants, soils, and animals that live in the garden, and creating nature art. Responsibilities:
Education (50%)
- Assist with planning and delivery of curriculum-based garden programs for pre-school, elementary and middle-school Students, and camp children.
Farming/Gardening (20%)
- Assist with the planting, maintenance, and harvesting of vegetables, fruit and herbs.
Indigenous and heritage and/or accessibility focused garden projects (15%)
- Research, plan, and implement Indigenous and cultural/botanical heritage or special needs focused garden projects.
- Track and record seed and plant sources and performance.
Other Duties (15%)
- Leading staff, volunteers, and interns in garden work.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate for this position is an enthusiastic educator with a passion for food, plants, and gardens. This person should be motivated and able to work independently as well as in a team.
In addition, the successful candidates must:
- have experience working with and educating children, especially outdoors
- be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions,
- be physically able and willing to conduct garden maintenance,
- be fluent in English with excellent oral communication skills,
- have basic proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite,
- be creative, patient, flexible and positive,
- and have, or be willing to acquire, a current Police Reference Check and basic First Aid certificate.
A drivers licence and occasional access to a car is an asset.
Eligibility:
This is a Canadian Heritage YCW supported position for full-time Students who are intending to return to full-time studies in the next semester.
You are eligible if you:
- are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada; Note: Non-Canadian Students holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible.
- are legally entitled to work in Canada,
- are between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment,
- are registered in the YCW on-line Candidates inventory,
- are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment,
- do not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with YCW,
- have been a full-time Students (as defined by your educational institution) in the semester preceding the YCW job,
- have finished the school term at the start of employment,
- and intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following the YCW job.

- Develop and deliver new and revise existing curriculum-connected educational programs for elementary and middle school students and camp children.
- Take a lead role in the planning and delivery of toddler and caregiver programs.
- Direct the planning, preparation and delivery of nature-based summer camps for children between the ages of 3 and 13, including some from high-needs communities.
- Maintain TBG’s learning spaces, including the classroom and its plants, vermicomposting worms and fish.
- Assist with the supervision of a small number of summer staff and volunteers.
- Perform some administrative duties.
- Conduct other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate for this position is an enthusiastic educator with a passion for natural heritage interpretation. A teacher’s degree is not required but preference will be given to those pursuing one. An academic background in the natural sciences is also considered an asset.
In addition, the successful candidate must:
- be fluent in English with excellent oral communication,
- have experience working with children and youth from schools and/or camps,
- have experience in environmental or outdoor education,
- have experience with the Ontario elementary school curriculum and/or curriculum design,
- have an interest in horticulture, food security, environmental science and/or nature,
- have experience with and be comfortable taking a leadership role in a small team,
- have moderate proficiency in Microsoft Office suite,
- be creative, patient, flexible and positive,
- be able to work as a member of a team and independently,
- be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions,
- and have, or be willing to acquire, a current Vulnerable Sector Police Reference Check and basic first aid certificate.
