Position: Conservation Biologist & Program Coordinator

Overview:
The Nova Scotia Salmon Association and its partners conduct freshwater conservation and recovery projects in support of Atlantic Salmon and the ecosystems they inhabit. One of the flagship projects is the West River, Sheet Harbour Acid Mitigation Project which is an integrated approach to recovering an Atlantic Salmon river and hinges upon combatting the effects of acid rain instream lime dosing, the areal application of lime to forested catchments, instream physical habitat restoration, scientific studies to address knowledge gaps, monitoring activities such as smolt enumeration, adult salmon trapping facilities, electrofishing water quality monitoring and many more activities. This project is under expansion and we are looking for a permanent biologist and program coordinator to work with our scientist, collaborative team and field staff.
Position: Conservation Biologist / Program Coordinator
Employer: The Nova Scotia Salmon Association
Wages: Starting salary $47,000-$50,000, commensurate with experience.
Location: Central Nova Scotia – TBD. The biologist will work independently from home. This position involves substantial seasonal field time on Nova Scotia’s eastern shore or other locations and attendance at regional meetings as needed so travel will be required.
Supervisor: The primary supervisor and point of contact will be the Nova Scotia Salmon Association’s research scientist.
Duties: May include, but are not limited to:
- seasonal field work in support of restoration, monitoring or research programs,
- supervision of technicians, students and volunteers
- design and planning of restoration work,
- data management,
- organization of volunteer field staff,
- coordination among partners, interaction with community groups including public presentations,
- development and maintenance of project websites
- Report and grant writing, basic financial reporting
- Establish health and safety plans and implementation
Education, Experience and Skills:
Must have a thorough working knowledge of fish sampling methods and equipment inc. electrofishing, water safety, aquatic research methods, stream mechanics, habitat management are all important job qualifications. Other important considerations include thorough working knowledge of computer use for data processing and statistical analysis, skills in writing, speaking and working effectively with a broad spectrum of individuals, groups & agencies.
The ability to operate a wide variety of vehicles, boats, motors, instruments and sampling equipment are needed, as well as the physical ability to do strenuous outdoor work in all weather conditions & locations. Must have reliable transportation. and a valid drivers licence
The knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the duties of this position are usually acquired through a MSc in Fish and Wildlife Biology or a closely related biological field experience. Equivalent experience will be considered and is generally defined as 3-5 years progressively responsible experience as a fisheries biologist or senior fisheries technician.
A combination of excellent work habits, technical ability, applied knowledge, problem-solving ability and leadership/people skills is necessary for this position.
