Hours & Wage: Full time 40 hours/week at $13.65/hour, dependant on funding from Canada Summer Jobs

The Gorge Waterway Action Society (GWAS) is seeking a hardworking and motivated individual to assist with habitat restoration and mitigation efforts in the vicinity of the Gorge Waterway, located in the heart of Victoria, B.C. The successful candidate will be responsible for a number of different tasks including working closely with the GWAS team and an associated network of NGOs to compile a directory of marine and terrestrial restoration/stewardship projects on the Gorge Waterway, and evaluate the need, practicality, and urgency for other restoration and stewardship projects. The successful candidate will work out of the Gorge Waterway Nature House. Additional responsibilities include: the preparation of grant proposals and fundraising; planning and leading community clean up, restoration and awareness events; assisting in water quality monitoring and other land and water based monitoring tasks associated with maintaining the ecological health of the Gorge; and co-managing the Gorge Waterway Nature House and its volunteers.

The successful candidate will also be responsible for the delivery of educational programming relevant to ecosystem restoration, focused in Esquimalt Gorge Park and its Gorge Waterway Nature House. The ecological landscape of this park includes horticultural and forested areas adjacent to the Gorge Creek, designed in 2005 to treat storm water from Esquimalt.

The Ecological Restoration Technician will:

  • Assist in the design and implementation of ongoing restoration projects and organize community restoration events;
  • Compile a directory of marine and terrestrial restoration and stewardship projects on the Gorge Waterway;
  • Prepare grant proposals and conduct fundraising events;
  • Assist with water quality monitoring and other land and water based monitoring tasks associated with maintaining the ecological health of the Gorge;
  • Co­-manage the Gorge Waterway Nature House and its volunteers;
  • Conduct education programs designed and implemented together with other NGOs and municipalities focused as appropriate in the Esquimalt Gorge Park.

Qualifications:

  • Education field of study: biology, ecological restoration, geography, environmental studies, earth and ocean sciences, or a related field;
  • Experience with restoration planning and project management;
  • Experience collaborating with ENGO networks and First Nation communities;
  • Familiarity with local common flora and fauna (both native and exotic) in terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems;
  • Valid Class 5 or 7N driver’s license;
  • Willingness and preparedness to work outdoors in all conditions;
  • First Aid certification, CPR­-C and FOODSAFE (may be provided); and
  • Willingness to submit a Criminal Record Check.

Assets:

  • Experience recruiting and managing volunteers;
  • Experience delivering environmental education programs;
    Insured vehicle for use during the position;
  • Knowledge of how to prepare and maintain a field notebook;
  • Knowledge of basic field surveying methods including: using compass, clinometer tapes, GPS units, maps, aerial photographs, stream and lake surveying equipment & basic approaches to surveying wildlife; and
  • Knowledge of basic sampling methods: Ph, Acidity, Coliform analysis (Freshwater sampling), Quadrat Analysis (Terrestrial Vegetation Sampling, Belt Transects & biophysical inventory (Marine Intertidal Sampling).

Eligibility:

  • Must be between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;
  • Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person on who refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.*Please note: Returning student eligibility requirement has been removed.
