The Association of Whistler Area Residents for the Environment (AWARE) is Whistler’s environmental charity, currently celebrating its 30th year. We work independently and with others to connect people with nature and build more sustainable communities.

AWARE is looking for a driven, accountable and knowledgeable individual to join our team as an Environmental Programming Assistant.

The Position:

The Environmental Programming Assistant works to engage residents and visitors in the Whistler resort community in local environmental projects, programs and events. This is a great opportunity for those interested in learning about the delivery of programming which speaks to a charitable mandate and engagement of varied stakeholder groups such as partners, funders and community members. This position offers 30 hours per week for a term of 16 weeks starting May 3th, 2019 through to August 30th, 2019.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist the AWARE team in the delivery of 2019 projects, ongoing programs and education events
  • Support the delivery of programs such as community gardens; kids nature programs; zero waste initiatives; film and workshop series; and interpreted nature hike programs.
  • Work with project delivery staff and stakeholders to input into a diverse mix of programming at various phases of delivery, including involvement in project planning and improvement meetings
  • Collaborate as needed with lead project delivery staff to help create awareness and communications tools to encourage public participation in new and existing programs.

The nature of this position is such that the successful candidate will engage with the full range of 23+ local environmental initiatives AWARE works on in the Whistler community. As such it is a great way to get a breadth of experience in a short timeframe. Upon starting in the role the successful candidate will work with the Executive Director to develop a work plan for the term of the position to ensure learning and professional development outcomes are clearly defined and can be demonstrated.

Requirements:

Qualified candidates will have an interest in natural sciences or communications; have strong computer skills; a broad understanding of media and other communications channels; and a keen interest in the Whistler community and environmental issues. The successful candidate will possess:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Organized, detail oriented, flexible and responsive working style
  • Experience in multichannel content creation
  • Experience with creating compelling messages for different target audiences
  • Knowledge and understanding of content distribution strategies and tactics
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office and graphic design software
  • Post-secondary education in communications, marketing, or public relations an asset
  • Experience working with media, as well as an interest in the Whistler lifestyle, are strong assets

This position is funding dependent. In order to be eligible for funding applicants need to:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment*; and,
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
