Term: April 22nd – August 31st (full-time), with the possibility of extension, if funding permits.

Rate of pay: $19/hr

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Sea to Sky Invasive Species Council (SSISC) is a non-profit organization that works to minimize the threat of invasive species in the Sea to Sky Corridor. The SSISC will be conducting inventory, control (mechanical and chemical), and site monitoring throughout the Sea to Sky region during the 2019 field season, and we require a self-motivated, hard-working individual with leadership qualities to perform the duties of Field Crew Lead Hand for 2019.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

The Field Crew Lead Hand will be part of a team of 9 that will carry out various invasive species management tasks including: Inventory of invasive species sites, application of chemical control and mechanical removals of invasive plants, monitoring of treatment sites, biocontrol surveys, frog and turtle surveys, mussel veliger sampling, field data recording using iPads, data management, IAPP data entry, planning and logistics, equipment maintenance, signage placement, and communication with community members.

The Field Crew Lead Hand will be the senior staff member on their crew of 2, and will be required to supervise and train the other team member in day to day field duties, and assist the Field Program Manager, the Field Technician and Executive Director with various planning, administrative, mapping and reporting tasks as required. Field Team Members may also be required to assist the Executive Director & Outreach Coordinator with education and outreach work, including attending outreach booths at local events and helping to organize and host weed pulls.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Energetic, self-motivated, team player that is super organized, and displays leadership qualities
  • Experience in identifying invasive plants;
  • Able and willing to carry out strenuous field work and repetitive tasks;
  • Able and willing to work in adverse field conditions;
  • Willing to work with herbicides and potentially dangerous plants (e.g. giant hogweed)
  • Able to navigate using maps and GPS; familiar with iPads and apps
  • Willing to work irregular hours including some weekends and evenings
  • Able to work with minimal supervision in an office or field environment, experience supervising others;
  • Comfortable communicating with clients, funders and community members;
  • Hold a Valid Pesticide Applicators Certificate for Industrial Vegetation and Noxious Weeds; or be willing to achieve certification within 3 weeks of contract start date
  • Must have a valid B. C. driver’s license
  • Must have a valid WCB Level 1 First Aid certification

If we are able to secure funding for this position from Canada Summer Jobs, or other youth/student focused funding, preference may be given to youth (aged 15-30), and/or current post-secondary students studying the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM).
