JOB OPPORTUNITY : Stewardship Data/Spatial Analyst

Business Unit: Metlakatla Stewardship Society (MSS)

Location: Metlakatla, British Columbia

Reporting to: MSS Director

The Metlakatla Stewardship Society has an opening for a full-time Stewardship Data/Spatial Analyst, commencing April 1st, 2019, and located in Metlakatla, BC. As the successful candidate, you will be responsible for data analysis and spatial mapping support to Metlakatla Stewardship Society’s (MSS) initiatives, in particular, the recently approved DFO Coastal Environmental Baseline Program. The MSS Baseline project focuses on monitoring the health and condition of nearshore habitats and shellfish populations in Metlakatla traditional territory. MSS also requires analytical and spatial mapping support for departments such as lands management, aquatic resources, and environmental assessment. The analyst will support the MSS team in uploading, accessing, analyzing, and using Stewardship data for reporting, resource management, and decision making.

Metlakatla Village is located 5km northwest of Prince Rupert, on an ancient site occupied for thousands of years by the Metlakatla people. As stewards of Metlakatla Territory, we are working to participate fully and effectively in resource planning and management decisions concerning our lands, waters, rights and title. We are working to ensure our actions today either maintain or enhance our environment and community for the future.

Responsibilities:

Data Mining and Management:

– Acquire data from primary or secondary (internal and external) data sources and maintain databases

– Data formatting and standardization for quantitative and spatial analysis

– Supervise/coordinate data entry, Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC)

– Develop data entry forms, support use of current data collection tools and explore other tools to support field data collection

– Research new data sources and novel data visualization and analysis techniques

– Coordinate with IT and support systems to develop and implement data management systems

– Ensure interoperability between existing platforms/systems that MSS currently uses

Data Analysis:

– Perform spatial analysis and GIS support

– Analyze data, interpret trends using statistical techniques METLAKATLA STEWARDSHIP SOCIETY

– Synthesize spatial, quantitative data

– Work with Metlakatla Stewardship Director, staff/departments to determine and prioritize data analysis and GIS needs

Reporting and Communication:

– Prepare reports, memos and presentations on data analysis

– Work with Baseline project manager to determine and prioritize data analysis needs

– Work with MSS Director and Staff to ensure data analysis program supports short terms needs while building towards MSS long term vision

Qualifications:

– Education: Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in relevant field, with concentrations in GIS, statistics and/or programming, biology, environmental sciences, computer science or similar

– At least three years of work experience or graduate degree

– Excellent communication skills –oral, written, interpersonal

– Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities and pressures

– Ability to work individually with little supervision and as part of a dynamic team

– Proficiency with Microsoft Office and experience with ESRI ArcGIS and/or QGIS (required)

– Experience using statistical software, with preference for coding and analysis using R

– Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy

– Adept at queries, report writing and presenting findings

Preference will be given to applicants with:

– Experience working with First Nation communities

– Background in resource management, coastal ecology and environmental data

– Familiarity with coastal datasets and data collection initiatives on North Pacific Coast

– Experience in implementing data security measures, particularly in a First Nations context
