2019 Summer Field Technicians (2 positions)

Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development

Resource Management Branch, Coast Area, Nanaimo

Temporary Opportunity – 16 weeks

The Resource Management Branch of the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development in Nanaimo is looking to hire two technicians in support of its 2019 summer monitoring activities. These are temporary field positions preferably starting on May 1 and ending on August 30 and are based out of our Nanaimo office. They are offered at the Youth Employment Program Level 2, so are open to full-time post-secondary students or recent graduates who have been out of school for 6 months or less. The purpose of these positions is to assist regional specialists with summer field work, data entry and reporting on the monitoring of low flows on Vancouver Island and collecting data from fisheries sensitive watersheds. Specific activities include:

Aquatic Monitoring Technician (1 Position)

  • Assist Ecosystem biologists with inventory work (field)
  • Install and maintain surface water flow monitoring equipment including data loggers, flumes and staff gauges (field)
  • Assist in fisheries assessments of sensitive streams (field)
  • Assist with other Fish and Wildlife and Ecosystems monitoring programs
  • Assist in completion of West Coast Low Flow monitoring summary reports
  • Compile data, generate graphs, present data to drought monitoring committee

Hydrometric Technician (1 Position)

  • Install and maintain hydrometric monitoring equipment including data loggers, flumes and staff gauges (field)
  • Compile data, generate graphs, present data to drought monitoring committee
  • Assist groundwater technician in maintaining observation wells (field)
  • Assist the Dam Safety Officer in completion of dam audits (field)
  • Assess water licence files for dams not in database

Experience in hydrology and/or aquatic ecology are an asset, but more important is the flexibility and willingness to learn new field skills. A valid Class 5 BC drivers licence and a pre-employment criminal record check are required.
