Position: Conservation Outreach Assistant

Job Description:

CPAWS Northern Alberta is seeking an enthusiastic, environmentally focused person to act as the Chapter’s Conservation Outreach Assistant to coordinate and manage the chapter’s summer outreach events. Duties include: (1) scheduling and leading outreach and education activities related to parks and wilderness in northern Alberta; (2) managing event volunteers and developing materials for outreach activities in the community; (3) liaising with community groups to organize participation in community events in and around Edmonton; and (4) assisting the Program Coordinator with chapter duties, as required. The Conservation Outreach Assistant will work on-site at the CPAWS Northern Alberta office in downtown Edmonton, as well as at outreach events throughout the city.

Responsibilities include:

  • Work with staff to develop an outreach and education plan that highlights the Chapter’s programs and activities.
  • Liaise with local community organizations to develop and schedule outreach opportunities
  • Lead/Attend outreach events and activities in and around Edmonton (evenings and weekends)
  • Organize and manage volunteers for outreach events and activities
  • Create and manage materials for outreach events and activities
  • Generate, edit, publish and share daily content on social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) that builds community and encourages participation form members and the public

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate possesses some post-secondary education in the fields of environmental sciences, environmental sociology, non-profit or business development/management, communications, or education, and has effective communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

This includes:

  • Enthusiasm for wilderness and conservation
  • The ability to communicate science to the general public
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to drive and access to a vehicle is required
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends throughout the summer is mandatory
  • Previous experience with volunteer management and volunteer management programs considered an asset
  • Knowledge of parks and protected areas policy and management is considered an asset.

Work Dates: May 13 or May 20, 2019 to September 2, 2019, 35 hours per week
