Job Posting: Ecological Horticulture Intern with the Earthwise Society // Deadline December 1st

ECOLOGICAL HORTICULTURE INTERN  
Earthwise Society is a not-for–profit, charitable organization operating a one acre ecological demonstration garden and organic teaching farm in Tsawwassen BC
The Earthwise Garden has been impacted by development on neighboring sites over the past two years, and the focus of this position will be to assist with restoring plantings and other features.   This will include habitat plantings,  a wildlife pond, and water conservation projects.  The  Ecological Horticulture Internship will provide an opportunity for a recent graduate to extend their knowledge and gain practical skills and hands on experience in all aspects of ecological  landscape practices. Working as part of a team, the Intern will:
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Restoration of the Earthwise Garden as a public demonstration garden, ensuring that plantings are healthy and attractive to garden visitors.
  • Help to maintain food gardens as part of the organic teaching farm
  • Assist in planning and planting a restored habitat garden,  including a wildlife pond and pollinator plantings
  • Assist with nursery and garden displays, plant propagation, inventory,  labeling and signage
  • Participate in organic soil management activities including composting, mulching, soil amendment and/or cover cropping plan and implement adult education programs on sustainable land use
  • Lead hands-on environmental educational workshops for school children –
  • Assist with the set up of water saving irrigation systems,  water conservation planning, and related education programs
  • Participate in the installation of new food gardens and habitat enhancement initiatives and in the community.
  • Assist with implementation and maintenance of demonstration garden projects in the community
  • Greet farm and garden visitors and provide information on sustainable growing practices
  • Work with volunteers on farm and garden projects
  • Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Recent graduation (within three calendar years)  from a post-secondary program in biology, environmental sciences, horticulture,  or related field
  • Intern must be a youth under 30 or younger
  • Knowledge and experience with  gardening and composting
  • Good customer service skills
  • Enjoyment of  outdoor physical work
 
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT 
This is a full-time paid internship, 35 hours per week, March 1 – December 19, 2020 paid at the rate of $16/hr, located in Tsawwassen,  BC.   Weekend work will be required.
