World Fisheries Trust is a Canadian, non-profit organization dedicated to the equitable and sustainable use and conservation of aquatic biodiversity. We act internationally with small-scale fisheries in Latin America and locally with environmental education and research, including Seaquaria Ocean Education, Gorge Waterway Nature House, Eco Learning Hive, and research on the Gorge Waterway ecosystem.
Job Description:
We are looking for a highly motivated student to join our team for the Winter session. The student will assist in environmental education programs and public outreach with our Seaquaria Ocean Education programs. The Seaquarium program installs and maintains chilled marine aquaria in 37 local schools, provides environmental education programs in classrooms and local beaches, as well as bringing a mobile aquarium to public events. Our education program is focused on scientific, place-based, and integrative education principles. The successful candidate will be a team player as well as be able to work independently, maintaining consistent and professional communication with volunteers, community groups, and co-workers. Flexibility in the candidate’s schedule is necessary to reflect the dynamic nature of this position. Knowledge of marine ecosystems and experience teaching children is preferred.
The Environmental Education and Research Assistant will:
- Assist in the setting up, maintenance, and take-down of Seaquaria saltwater aquariums.
- Assist in the delivery and development of nature interpretive programs with Seaquaria, the Naturehouse, or elsewhere
- Assist in special events organization and implementation, including attending public events with our Mobile Seaquarium and Watershed Model;
- Drive to and from educational programs, schools with Seaquaria, and local beaches;
- Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications Required:
- A post-secondary student in biology, environmental studies, education, or related field;
- An understanding of marine animal biology and ecological principles is preferred;
- Experience working with youth and groups is preferred;
- Experience delivering educational programs;
- Experience working with volunteers;
- Valid driver’s license;
- First Aid certification is preferred;
- Willingness to submit to a Criminal Record Check.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Is a Co-op student in a post-secondary, vocational or technical program;
- Is between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;
- Is a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act;
- Is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations.
