Summer Research Position:
The Forest Insect Disturbance Ecology Lab (FIDEL, supervised by Dr. Allan Carroll) is looking for a summer research assistant to work on a variety of graduate projects. This role is primarily to assist visiting PhD student Mike Howe. This research focuses on determining whether mountain pine beetle can persist in whitebark pine forests at low population densities by setting up baited traps along mountain side transects. We are searching for a motivated student that is in good physical shape to help set up traps and collect data. The job would include travelling for 2-3 weeks three times during the summer and working closely with Mike for each of those sampling periods. Position will be paid, full time from May 1-August 31 and based out of Vancouver. When not assisting on Mike’s research, there will be multiple trips to sample with 2 other graduate student projects, in both the lower mainland and in the Alex Fraser Research Forest. A successful candidate will be in good physical shape (sampling requires hiking on steep mountain sides at high elevation hauling traps), be interested in learning a variety of field and laboratory skills, and have a strong interest in forest or ecological research. If interested please send in a current resume to kate.kitchens@ubc.ca and howe3@wisc.edu. Applicants will be considered on a rolling basis.
