Duties

Your job would be to:
ENGAGE audiences through activities and programs at special events and urban venues such as parks, zoos, aquariums, museums and Parks Canada sites.
Develop and deliver programs that INSPIRE Canadians to learn more about Parks Canada
Explore and share the exciting world of camping with Canadians in and out of Parks Canada places
Provide the information and skills visitors need to embark on an ADVENTURE at Parks Canada places
Facilitate MEMORABLE experiences for all Canadians
Use your CREATIVITY by contributing to Parks Canada’s programs and initiatives

Job opportunities:
1) Urban Outreach Team Members for the Parks Canada Outreach Team in Vancouver
Job would include:
 Attending and delivering outreach activities at local Vancouver events
 Engaging and inspiring urban audiences to visit Parks Canada places
 Delivering outreach activities and interpretive programs at partner venues such as the Vancouver Aquarium, Science World and the Maritime Museum
2) Parks Canada Learn to Camp Team Members in Vancouver
o Job would include:
 Developing and delivering 1-2 hour workshops and presentations at venues such as public libraries and municipal parks on equipping urban Vancouver audiences with the skills they need to embark on their first camping trip
 Inspiring Vancouverites to get outside and participate in nature-based activities
 Attending and delivering Learn-to Camp specific outreach activities at local Vancouver events

Applicants must be registered full time in a recognized university, college or CEGEP education program
Applicants must have completed one year of full-time post-secondary education by January 2018

Degree equivalency

Experience working or volunteering at public events
Experience creating and delivering presentations/public speaking to a variety of audiences
Experience in interpretation and/or public engagement

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

Previous experience using interpretation methods in museums, historic sites or nature/wildlife settings
Experience in outdoor activities like canoe, kayak, camping, etc.
Experience delivering programming to multicultural audiences

Preference may be given to bilingual candidates or candidates with additional language skills.

Information on language requirements

Knowledge of Parks Canada places and its mandate;
Knowledge of communication techniques used in interpretation such as, storytelling, theatre, music, etc.
Knowledge of social media

Ability to work collaboratively with others
Interpersonal and leadership skills
Ability to interact with and present to a wide variety of audiences
Advanced communications skills (oral and written) in the Candidates first language (English or French)
Able to adapt to a variety of situations and changing work locations

Valid driver’s licence
General knowledge of Canadian heritage and/or natural sciences and/or Canadian history
Knowledge of traditions, culture and practices of Indigenous peoples concerning the management of cultural resources in the local area of work
Advanced communications skills (oral) in languages other than English and French

Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform and occasionally a mascot costume
Willingness to work varied hours, weekends, holidays, and overtime
Willingness to work outdoors, sometimes in adverse weather conditions
Willingness to set-up, take-down and move equipment

Students will be asked to provide proof that they meet these requirements.

Applicants must have a valid Emergency First Aid and CPR certification by the start of the work term (January 2018)
Some positions require a valid driver’s license
Successful students will work for approximately 16 to 18 weeks between January and the end of April, 2018. Positions require students to work variable hours, shift-work, weekends and holidays, as well as work in a range of weather conditions.
Successful candidates must commit to the entire work term.
