Volunteer Opportunity: Creatures of the Night at Stanley Park Ecology Society in October

Role: Creatures of the Night Volunteers

Join SPES’ Creatures of the Night team and use your creative skills to connect people with nature in Stanley Park.

Purpose: To help the Stanley Park Ecology Society (SPES) create an entertaining and educational nature program that includes creature feature and light pollution information stations to take place in partnership with the Halloween Ghost Train in Stanley Park

This popular event runs October 12th – October 31st, with training taking place during last week of September and beginning of October. Volunteers must be able to commit a minimum of 1 shift (3-4 hours) per week. Shifts are available Monday – Sunday evenings, as well as Friday – Sunday during the daytime. You are NOT required to volunteer on Thanksgiving Day.

Available Positions:

  • Information Station Attendants
    • Educating visitors about wildlife using different animal props
    • Educating visitors about light pollution through interactive displays
  • Animal actors
    • Interacting, in character and costume, with children and families in the Ghost Train plaza to educate them about nocturnal animals and direct them towards the Creatures of the Night tents – character training will be provided.

Training: Training will take place on Sunday, October 1 from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. and Tuesday, October 3 from 6:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. Please specify in your application if you’re unable to make either of the training dates.

Duties:

  • Provide educational information that encourages respect and understanding for wildlife.
  • Answer visitor questions, provide directions and share information about SPES.
  • Dress in SPES, Hallowe’en, or animal actor costume

Requirements;

  • Minimum 16 years of age
  • Good command of spoken English
  • Enthusiasm, creativity, and a passion for connecting people with nature
  • Reliable and able to commit for the duration of the event
  • Interested in nature, wildlife, and environmental education
  • Acting/theatre background is an asset if applying for Animal Actor role
