International Service Learning opportunities for Forestry Students in January 2018 // Deadline Oct. 9th

CO-CURRICULAR PLACEMENT OPTIONS: January Placements (January-April 2018; three month placements)

Sustainable Technology Development & Implementation: Sucre, Bolivia Open to all UBC students, those in Forestry, Applied Science, and Social Sciences are encouraged to apply:

Students will be placed with Oasis Boliviano and the Fundación Solidaridad y Amistad on the implementation of a BioSand Filter (to treat contaminated drinking water) project in rural communities of Chuqisaca. The first phase of the project will take place in the community of Teja Huasi where students will assist in the completion of a BioSand Filter project that has already been initiated in conjunction with the community. After a month in Teja Huasi, students will begin alternating their time between Teja Huasi and other rural communities where FSA works, in order to build and install filters in rural schools as part of an effort to raise awareness about the BioSand Filter as a potentially useful option for water treatment in dispersed rural communities.

Sea Turtle and Sloth Conservation: Costa Rica Open to all UBC students with an interest in environmental conservation and restoration. Suggested disciplines include, but are not limited to; Biology, Environmental Science, Land and Food Systems, and Forestry:

Our community partner is Quelonios del Caribe, a Community Based Organization located in the community of Pacuare, on a sandy coastline which has a unique set of agriculture conditions. UBC students will assist with the basic technical training of volunteers with Quelonios, specifically in sea turtle and sloth conservation. Further tasks include, but are not limited to; beach surveillance of turtle nests and nest data collection, monitoring local sloth populations, aiding in the relocation of turtle nests, as well as analysis of changes to local mammal populations. The aim of this internship is to provide assistance to Quelonios del Caribe while learning about environmental conservation, social change, and community development in Costa Rica.

Financial Resources for Quality Education – Analysis & Collection: Nairobi, Kenya  Open to all UBC students from any faculty with an interest in special needs education. Business, medicine, and education-related majors encouraged to apply:

Students will be placed with Little Rock, an early childhood education and resource center which focuses on special needs education. Students placed in this role will work with Little Rock administrative staff to assess the financial needs of the organization, and pursue different funding options. Responsibilities will include research into public and private grant opportunities, preparation of proposals and applications, as well as identifying key organizational contacts for future needs. Ideal candidates have strong writing and computer skills as well as an interest in special needs and childhood education.

Childhood Special Needs Education Training in Public Schools: Nairobi, Kenya Open to all UBC students from any faculty with an interest in special needs education:

Students will be placed with Little Rock, an early childhood education and resource center which focuses on special needs education. Little Rock aims to provide training to educators in the surrounding public schools of Kibera, to help teachers both understand children with special needs and increase their effectiveness in working with such students. Students will work alongside Little Rock staff to develop educational interventions and curriculum to better serve the special needs population. Once the curriculum is approved by the Ministry of Education, students will work on the creation and implementation of detailed program and lesson plans as part of the project. Interns will work alongside school educators and administrators who have a strong background in working with children with special needs
