This documentary entitled, ‘Mount Gariwang: An Olympic Casualty,‘ tells the story of a formerly protected mountain in South Korea that was partially razed to build an alpine ski venue for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic & Paralympic Games, which resulted in the displacement of local residents (both human and non-human) in the area. It is a documentary concerned with sustainability, politics and sport mega-events.
The documentary grapples with questions that transcend sport mega-events and geographical boundaries, such as: what inequalities are perpetuated in environmental controversies?; how are environment-related decisions made and whose voices are featured or marginalized in the process?; what assumptions underline dominant approaches to ‘sustainability’ and how do they influence our ability to imagine alternative and preferred ecological and socio-political futures?
The documentary is presented by the School of Kinesiology and the Centre for Sport and Sustainability (CSS), and supported by UBC Sustainability, AMS Sustainability, Centre for Community Engaged Learning (CCEL), and the Centre for Korean Research (CKR). A trailer for the documentary is available here.
The screening event will take place from 5pm-6:30pm on Thursday 29 November 2018 in the BC Hydro Theatre of the CIRS building (2260 West Mall). The event will include the screening of the documentary (24 minutes), a discussion portion with the producers, as well as a catered reception.
